Trump news today: Latest as Capitol riot committee subpoenas ex-president’s speechwriter and Don Jr advisers

Fox News host says Trump must ‘learn to lose’

Lawyers for former president Donald Trump and the Trump Organization asked a federal judge to bar New York State Attorney General Letitia James’ office from investigating them or order her to recuse herself from any investigation into the real estate company.

The twice-impeached ex-president sued Ms James last month in hopes of stopping a long-running probe into whether he or his company violated New York tax laws.

The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of New York, claims Ms James’ efforts “are in no way connected to legitimate law enforcement goals, but rather, are merely a thinly-veiled effort to publicly malign Trump and his associates”.

Meanwhile the one-term president’s middle son, Eric Trump, lashed out at Ms James, claiming that her probe was unconstitutional.

The younger trump made the incorrect statements during an appearance on Sean Hannity’s show on Fox News in which he claimed Ms James’s investigation into whether his family business violated New York tax laws is meant to keep his father from running for president in 2024 and amounts to “effectively handing” that election to President Joe Biden.

Meanwhile, US Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota has said he stands by his comments that Mr Trump lost the 2020 election, after Trump called his fellow Republican a “jerk” for his comments.

Mr Rounds said he was “disappointed but not surprised” by Mr Trump’s attack.

Jim Jordan ribbed over ‘truth’ by 6 January panel member Jamie Raskin

Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan, a key ally Trump ally on Capitol Hill, is refusing a call to testify to the 6 January select committee and explain what he knew in advance of the day of the insurrection and what communications he had with Mr Trump and the White House while the riot was underway.

In an interview, committee member Jamie Raskin reminded viewers of the aggressive way Mr Jordan conducted himself during the investigation into what Hillary Clinton knew about the Benghazi attack. Quoting Mr Jordan’s own demand that “the truth must come out”, Mr Raskin made clear what he thought of his colleague’s stonewalling.

“Jim Jordan, more than anybody else, knows what a dogged, aggressive investigation is about,” the Maryland Democrat said. “Even when he’s on a wild goose chase, he demands all the information he wants, and we’re not on that. We are on the central investigative mission certainly of this decade, if not this century, to get to the bottom of this terrible political crime that was incited and to a substantial extent organized by Donald Trump.”

Ex-NYC police commissioner Kerik to sit for interview with Jan 6 committee

Bernard Kerik, the former New York City police commissioner, has agreed to voluntarily sit for an interview with the House select committee investigating the 6 January riots, his attorney said.

Kerik was subpoenaed by the committee in November for his involvement with former president Donald Trump in its efforts to retain control of the White House.

Kerik’s attorney, Timothy Parlatore, told the Hill that they had planned to appear but walked out of Thursday’s slated deposition with the committee, citing opposition to Republicans role within the panel’s structure.

But he said they made the decision after the committee agreed to allow the former New York police commissioner to appear outside of a formal deposition.

“I believe that they lack the authority to conduct depositions. However, Mr Kerik does want to meet with them and to provide them with information and so therefore, we will do it by voluntary interview,” Parlatore said.

Don Jr roasted after he called Eric Swalwell a ‘moron’

Donald Trump Jr was brutally roasted in an online feud after he attacked Democrat Representative Eric Swalwell, a key member of the House Intelligence Committee who pushed to investigate the Trump family.

The Twitter feud kicked off after Trump Jr called Mr Swalwell, California Representative and a lawyer, a “moron”

“You think China targeted Swalwell because he’s so “effective” or because they thought he was a moron?” former president’s son said.

Swalwell was, however, quick to respond to the sneer directed at him and responded by taking a jibe at Trump Jr’s history of being manipulated by foreign nationals.

“Why did Russia target you? Probably not for coke. If it’s what you say, I love it, especially later in the summer,” Swalwell said.

Trump Jr targeted Swalwell referring to the incident when the Democrat was approached by an alleged Chinese spy Christine Fang and attempted to reportedly get romantically involved with him. It was only after the FBI informed him of the woman’s affiliations that Swalwell cut off ties with her to prevent a potential national security breach.

Biden calls capitol riot an ‘attempted coup’ for first time

US president Joe Biden on Tuesday dubbed the 6 January Capitol riot a “coup” attempt for the first time in a year, as he sharpened his attack on the former president Donald Trump.

“We’re here today to stand against the forces in America that value power over principle — forces that attempted a coup, a coup against the legally expressed will of the American people by sowing doubt, inventing charges of fraud and seeking to steal the 2020 election from the people,” Mr Biden.

His remarks came during a speech pushing for the passage of voting rights legislation in a shared Atlanta venue for historically black colleges.

The president added: “They want chaos to reign. We want the people to rule. The battle for the soul of America is not over. We must stand strong and stand together to make sure Jan. 6 marks not the end of democracy, but the beginning of a renaissance of our democracy.”

It was the first time Mr Biden referred to it as a “coup” after previously calling it an “armed insurrection”.

Donald Trump says GOP Rep Elise Stefanik could be president in 2028

Addressing a fundraiser event at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, former president Donald Trump praised representative Elise Stefanik and said she could be president in about six years.

“I want to congratulate Elise on her success. Man is she moving fast. That means at this rate she’ll be president in about six years,” Mr Trump said about the US representative for New York’s 21st congressional district.

“She’s always been a friend and people would say she’s upwardly mobile. She goes to Washington as a young beautiful woman who took over and all of a sudden she becomes a rocket ship, she’s the boss. She’s been a great boss, a strong boss,” he added.

The fundraiser with 200 attendees raised $3.2 million.
