U.S. Rep. John Katko’s abrupt decision Friday to retire from Congress at the end of the year has sent shockwaves through the political world in Central New York, changing the dynamic of the 2022 election.

The race for Congress is now wide open for both Republicans and Democrats, and some in the GOP wasted no time Friday contacting party officials about making a bid for the open seat, local elected officials and party leaders said.
