Brazilian court investigates Bolsonaro comments on vax, AIDS

The Brazilian Supreme Court is investigating President Jair Bolsonaro over comments he made linking COVID-19 vaccines and AIDS, according to reports.

Bolsonaro, who is not vaccinated and has questioned the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines, made the comments on an Oct. 24 Facebook livestream, the BBC reported.

The Brazilian president claimed on the stream that reports “suggest that people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 are developing Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) much faster than expected,” according to the outlet.

That claim has been rejected by experts, according to the outlet.

On Friday, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled Bolsonaro “used the modus operandi of mass dissemination schemes in social networks,” according to the BBC. Moraes ordered Brazil’s chief prosecutor to look into the comments.

Bolsonaro, who is also under investigation for his handling of the pandemic, said he is “guilty of absolutely nothing.”
